Devotees nailed to crosses on Good Friday in Philippines

Apr 26, 2019

SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines — Several Roman Catholic devotees were nailed to wooden crosses in a gory Good Friday ritual in the Philippines, and others flogged themselves or took part in religious plays to reenact Jesus Christ's suffering. Four men and a woman, some wearing crowns of twigs, were escorted by villagers dressed as Roman centurions and nailed to crosses on a dusty hill in San Pedro Cutud village. Similar reenactments played out in nearby farming towns in the northern Philippines. Thousands, including many tourists, watch the annual spectacle. The Catholic Church frowns upon it, instead calling on the faithful...

Alibaba head's remarks spark debate over China working hours

Apr 26, 2019

BEIJING — Chinese e-commerce tycoon Jack Ma has long been an example of how the power of big dreams, strong leadership and sheer elbow grease can create massive fortunes in China's go-go economy. Yet, recent remarks by the head of Chinese online business giant Alibaba that young people should be prepared to work 12-hour days, six days a week have prompted a public debate over work-life balance in the country. Ma is one of China's richest men and his comments brought both condemnation and support as China's maturing economy enters a period of slower growth — and young people look...

Indonesia's Widodo set for 2nd term as president

Apr 26, 2019

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesian President Joko Widodo has won a second five-year term, preliminary election results showed Wednesday, in a victory for moderation over the nationalistic rhetoric of his rival, Prabowo Subianto. Vote counts from five independent survey groups showed Widodo with a clear lead over Subianto, a general during the era of the Suharto military dictatorship who warned Indonesia would fall apart without his strongman leadership. The so-called "quick counts" from reputable survey organizations that use a sample of polling stations have been reliable in past elections. With an average of 80% of sample polling stations counted, the five...

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Latest on Indonesia's presidential and legislative elections (all times local): 5 p.m. Both candidates in Indonesia's presidential election have addressed supporters after preliminary results showed President Joko Widodo leading his rival Prabowo Subianto by about 10 points. Widodo said he was aware of his lead and thanked election workers and government agencies for a smooth election. He called for the nation to reunite after the divisions of the election campaign. He said: "From the indications of the exit poll and also the quick counts, we can see it all, but we must be patient to wait...

Strongman vies with 'people's president' to lead Indonesia

Apr 26, 2019

JAKARTA, Indonesia — In the final moves of Indonesia's presidential campaign, one candidate dashed to Saudi Arabia to meet its king and perform a minor pilgrimage. The other attended a feline photography exhibition and giggled with delight at a giant photo of his own pet cat. For the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, the message intended by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's trip to the birthplace of Islam was obvious after a campaign in which conservative opponents tried to discredit him as insufficiently Islamic. What his challenger for a second time, former special forces general Prabowo Subianto, meant was less apparent....
